How to spot a fake ID in 4 steps

In the UK, age verification isn’t just a box to tick; it’s a legal obligation. In industries where access to products and services is restricted by age - like alcohol, tobacco, gambling and nightclubs - ensuring that only those of legal age can enjoy these offerings is crucial for protecting businesses, customers, and society as a whole.

With the introduction of Challenge 25 and stricter ID regulations, the prevalence of fake IDs has risen. These counterfeit documents have been a challenge since the First World War and with over 8 million people in the UK (around 1 in 8) having confessed to using fake ID, it poses serious problems for businesses that don’t take age verification seriously.

How to spot a fake ID in 4 steps

Why is age verification important?

Before we talk about fake identification, let’s cover why age verification is so critical. Dealing with age-restricted products is part of a daily job in fast-paced sectors like hospitality, retail and entertainment where age verification is not just a best practice but a legal requirement.

For individuals using a fake ID, the consequences can be severe and could include anything from fines and criminal charges to a permanent record. Businesses that fail to verify age properly, have similar risks. If caught failing to verify properly, they could face legal action, fines, and of course, reputational damage.

What repercussions could your business face as a result of non compliance?

Fines - You may be fined heavily for selling age-restricted products to young people. In 2022, the retail and hospitality sector incurred around £2bn in fines for violations related to underage sales.

Legal repercussions - In addition to fines, you may face other legal consequences, such as licence suspension or revocation.

Community reputation - Underage sales can damage your business's reputation and lead to loss of customers.

It’s also important to note that the police and trading standards officers may send children into licensed premises to try to buy age restricted products as part of their efforts to eradicate underage purchases. If the child is served, the business, as well as the individual serving may be prosecuted.

What is a fake ID?

A fake ID is any form of identification used to misrepresent someone’s age or identity. It includes documents that have been altered, counterfeited, or forged.

There are a few different types of fake IDs, including:

  • Altered IDs

These are genuine IDs that have been modified, such as changing the birth date or photo to match the user.

  • Counterfeit IDs

Entirely fake IDs made to look legitimate. These can sometimes be high quality, making them harder to detect. They can be copies of genuine documents or completely counterfeit. Almost 14% of fraud in 2023 was specifically document fraud, almost double the proportion in 2022.

  • Borrowed IDs

Using someone else’s legitimate ID, usually a lookalike friend or sibling. It’s technically not fake, but it’s still fraudulent. This is often known as “passing-off”.

  • Fraudulently obtained IDs

These are genuine IDs that have been fraudulently obtained, usually via identity theft.

4 ways to spot a fake ID during age verification

For those who’ve been in hospitality for a while, spotting a fake ID might feel like second nature. But let’s be honest, the folks making these fakes are getting cleverer by the day, so it’s always worth brushing up. Here’s a few handy tips:

1. Examine physical features

First off, give the ID a good once over. Real IDs typically have several security features—think holograms, UV images, tiny fibres, and, of course, the photo itself. If something’s off or missing, it’s a big red flag. Make sure everyone on the team is familiar with the typical look and feel of legit IDs, and keep an eye out for any design changes over time so you’re not thrown off by updates.

2. Check for inconsistencies

Details matter! Compare the person’s appearance with the ID. Check out things like height, hair colour, and eye colour. If they look like a totally different person, there’s a problem. It’s also best practice to know the format of standard IDs in the UK (or wherever you’re operating)—fake IDs often get the finer details wrong.

3. Use verification tools

If your business has UV lights or scanners, use them! These tools can reveal embedded security features or digital codes that forgers usually can’t replicate. It’s worth making this a habit—it’ll catch even the sneakiest of fakes and keep your checks consistent. Seeing these tools in place can also act as a deterrent.

4. Ask supporting questions

If you’re suspicious, try asking a few questions. Something quick, like their birth date or star sign, is easy enough for someone to remember if it’s really theirs. If they hesitate or get it wrong, it’s often a sign they’re not being truthful. Quick but casual questions can go a long way in confirming someone’s identity.

Common red flags in a fake ID

Many fake IDs have telltale signs that give them away, and if you’re suspicious, here are some most common things to watch out for:

  • Misspelt words - Real IDs don’t have typos. If you spot one, odds are it’s a fake. Slow down a bit, and check those small details, especially in any fine print.

  • Inconsistent fonts - Check for any weird font size or colour inconsistencies. Familiarising yourself with the usual fonts on legitimate IDs will make these stand out.

  • Peeling laminate - A legitimate ID shouldn’t have peeling or separating laminate. If you spot it, that ID has likely been tampered with and warrants further checking.

  • Outdated design - Keep up with current ID designs. If the ID looks too old or you don’t recognise the design, it might not be real.

  • Materials used - Genuine IDs use specific materials that give them a particular feel. Some counterfeits are flimsy or feel off right away—trust your hands as well as your eyes.

What to do if you spot a fake ID

So, you think you’ve spotted a fake—what now? Here’s a step-by-step approach:

1. Stay calm and professional

Instead of accusing them outright, simply mention that there are some inconsistencies you’d like to double-check. This keeps things professional and reduces the chance of unnecessary confrontation.

2. Involve a manager or security

If you’re unsure, or if the situation starts feeling a bit heated, get a manager or security staff involved. They’ve often got more training in these situations and can make the final decision.

3. Retain the ID (if possible)

Depending on your local regulations you may be able to  confiscate the ID if it’s proven to be fake. Always check your company’s policy first though. If you can’t take it, you can still refuse service.

4. Report the incident

Many businesses are legally required to report instances of fake ID use, especially in sectors like gambling or alcohol sales. Make sure you document the incident accurately and follow your company’s protocol for notifying the authorities or relevant organisations.
