What is a fire marshal?
The designated fire marshal or fire warden is appointed to contribute to fire prevention and safe evacuation proceedings in the event of a fire in the workplace.
Depending on the size of the building and the number of people in it, the business owner or operator will usually appoint one or more fire wardens or marshals to assist in fire safety actions.
How to become a designated fire marshal?
To become the designated fire marshal, the appointed individual must complete fire safety training as well a specific fire marshal award to become a certified fire marshal.
For employees, the employer would usually arrange fire marshal training and for business owners, they should seek out an accredited course to complete their training.
Is fire marshal training a legal requirement?
The Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2004 (RRFSO) determines that for all businesses and premises in the UK, the responsible person (usually the business or building owner), must appoint one or more competent persons to assist in undertaking the preventive and protective measures to ensure fire safety in the workplace.
